War criminal won big jackpots in Australian casinos
As a form of entertainment gambling has been enjoyed for ages by million of players all over the world. People usually play for fun different types of games and if Lady Luck is present they may be rewarded by big jackpots too.
It has become recently clear that a major war criminal hit up Australian casinos betting millions
A man called Joseph Wong Kiia Tai was accused for dealing arms to Liberian war criminal and had UN sanctions banning him from travels. He is currently facing charges of providing financial and military support to Charles Taylor’s regime. It was also forbidden for him to have access to his assets.
But surprisingly, earlier this month this war criminal was found betting millions in Australian casinos. He might have found a way to gain entry into Australia as he played and bet million of dollars in Crown casinos in Melbourne and Perth.
Joseph Wong Kiia Tai was punished with UN sanctions because he had business affairs with a Liberian war criminal called Charles Taylor. Mr Wong supported Charles Taylor financially. This means he provided him with military arms.
As a major player in the Sierra Leone civil war Charles Taylor was imprisoned for 50 years. In 2004 Mr Wong was sentenced with international sanctions. His support in Taylor’s regime was taken as a way to destabilize the country and gain access to the nation’s diamonds.
Being believed to be a risk, Joseph Wong Kiia Tai was banned to travel anywhere in the world including Australia. Additionally to this, to prevent him from being able to gamble large sums of money his assets were frozen by the UN.
Mr Wong could find how to enter Australia and he also gained an access to 2 Crown casinos. He even managed to visit these casinos several times. The records show that during his visits he lost $6 million playing different casino games.
And now some questions appear without clear answers. They are all about Wong's presence and play at the Crown casinos during the time the sanctions were still in force. There are some questions about the checks carried out by Crown casino especially when it comes to high-spending players.
Now the Department of Home Affairs will have the duty to implement a thorough investigation on how Wong managed to bypass the system. From the other hand, it is important to know the responsibility of Crown casinos in beating money-laundering and any other criminal activities.
