10 - Owning Mahowny

Dan Mahowny is quickly climbing the career ladder at a Canadian commercial bank. At just 24, he is an assistant manager at one of the bank’s branches, in the financial hub of Toronto. For his colleagues and customers he is a helpful and capable professional. His friends and girlfriend, too, think he is great. No one knows what his addiction is. Dan is deep into gambling, and to indulge in his hobby he creates dummy accounts at the bank. He needs the money to fly to Altantic City and gamble there. He plays on and on, uncontrolled, until he loses everything. He is found out and arrested.

 

 

9 - The Cooler

Love can go with casino gambling. The Cooler, or the unlucky guy who brings bad luck to the players by just being at the gambling tables, is called Bernie. Bernie’s boss Shelly has paid off his debts at the casinos, and he wants to leave Las Vegas. But love comes to him as Natalie, the cocktail waitress. Shelly has paid her to make Bernie stay, pretending she is in love. But love becomes real between them. They have difficulties with Shelly, who is not too keen on updating the property in compliance with the 21st century spirit. But she cannot stand in the way of innovation.

Jack is a writer who has to work for a living, so he becomes a croupier. His fellow workers there are different, one cheats the casino; he goes into bed with another one, Bella. He writes about a merciless croupier, describing in fact himself. He even accepts to help robbers who are planning a raid of the casino, and gets a hefty advance payment. He finishes his book, which becomes a blockbuster. When a robbery is involved, things always get complicated, and Jack experiences complications, too. He finds out they found him the croupier’s job to carry out the robbery successfully.

 

 

7 - Maverick

Bret Maverick is a gambler, on his way to a poker tournament. He does not just aim for the prize, he wants to prove how brilliant he is at cards. The movie is set in the past, and Maverick travels in a stagecoach. He goes through adventures with migrants, Indians, and enters a swindling scheme, in which he can get lots of money. But there are rival players traveling with him. They try to prevent Maverick from reaching the tournament. Despite the adventures on his way, Maverick wins the tournament. But the money gets stolen, he has to fight for it and chase it.

 

 

6 - The Color of Money

Eddie is a former hustler, now a successful salesman. He meets a young pool player, Vincent, and offers to teach him the knack of hustling. But as he demonstrates his skills in the game, he finally loses. He is humiliated by the loss, and when he meets Vincent again, he plays against him and this time wins. Vincent says he intentionally lost, to win a bet, and offers Eddie a share. Eddie is unhappy, he wants to celebrate a real victory against Vincent, and starts another game with him. He even promises that if he loses again, he will eventually win against Vincent in the future.

 

 

5 - The Gambler

Jim is not only a literature professor, but an addicted gambler too. He ends up with two large debts that he must pay soon, or he will be murdered. The solution seems to be borrowing from another loan shark, or perhaps persuading his mum to lend him enough to pay off his debts. Eventually Jim’s mother gives him the money, but he gambles it away, the whole amount. Jim is kidnapped and forced into convincing a student, Lamar, keen on basketball, to win a match by a given margin. Meanwhile, Jim manages to get some money, gambles, and pays off, so he is broke, but debt-free.

Ben, who is accepted into a medical school, can’t afford the fee. He competes for a scholarship that can pay his fee entirely, but to get it, he must “dazzle” the director. Meanwhile, he is hoaxed into joining a Blackjack team of fellow students. He enjoys luxury in Las Vegas. However, he fails to complete an engineering competition project, and that affects his playing. He loss and has problems with his teammates. He offers the team to hit Las Vegas for one more game. They go and win, but then chases and holding at gunpoint follow. Finally, Ben tells that story of adventures and dazzles the director.

 

 

3 - The Sting

It is the year 1936. Johny, a grifter, cons a large cash amount with his partners’ help. He get advice to look for a big con specialist to teach him the proper trade. But the con victim has mighty friends, and Johny has problems. He must look for help. The con specialist creates a phony parlor for off track betting. It is time for poker with high stakes. It is, too, time for revenge for the con victim’s people. Chases, murders, large betting on races follow. The end will be fortunate for Johny, who will emerge alive, but will refuse to get his money share.

 

 

2 - Rounders

Two friends go into high stakes poker, as they need cash to repay a debt. They are rounders: they travel from one city to another, to seek and play high stake games. The money they need is very much, as Mike, one of the friends, has lost his whole bankroll in a Texas Hold’em game. First Mike decides to stop playing poker, but his childhood friend Lester, recently released from prison, makes him go rounding again. Not everything is a path laid with roses on the way, but Mike ends up restoring his bankroll, and even heads to Vegas for the World Series of Poker event.

Eddie is a hustler on a small scale, traveling with a partner to challenge a player, Fats, who is a living legend. They set out to play straight pool, and at one time a professional gambler joins the game. A whole 25 hours after, Eddie loses. But he plans to challenge Fats once again. He stakes his whole amount on the game with Fats. Luck is with him, he wins a string of games, and Fats has to quit. Eddie’s happiness is not full, because his girlfriend has died. The two players finish the game by paying each other compliments.
